The name grasshopper applies around 8000 species of insect.  They come in varying size, color and body shape.  Generally they have long legs with which they hop although their wings help them to go longer distances.

So far in the garden we have not seen grasshoppers in high enough concentration to worry about.  With only a few around there really is no reason to kill them.  However, many species of grasshopper can multiply in great numbers including the lubber grasshopper on the right.  In this case these bugs are large enough that they can be pulled off and smashed.  Spraying should not be necessary
